The design draws inspiration from the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, where the balance of organic curves and paneling seamlessly links the different areas of the interior. The main colour palette is composed of earthy, muted tones such as browns, greys, beiges, and a hint of natural green, reminiscent of traditional Japanese homes built from earth and mud. This harmonious balance of colours infuses the space with a sense of realness and warmth.
To capture the essence of Wabi-Sabi's earthy and muted tones, the designer chose a lime wash paint finish for the walls and ceilings, paired with natural wood laminate and travertine stone. This combination of materials creates a comforting aesthetic, perfect for cultivating a sense of peace and tranquility. The show unit is designed for a 3-bedroom apartment with an internal space size of 1,110sqft.
The design was realized through meticulous planning and execution. Once the concept and interior design scheme of Wabi-Sabi were determined, an artist's impression of the space was created. After the design was approved, the necessary materials were chosen, and detailed construction drawings were prepared to guide the construction work. The project started in October 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was completed in January 2023.
Understanding the concept of Wabi-Sabi was an essential part of creating this unique and meaningful space. Wabi refers to the beauty found in asymmetrical and unbalanced objects, while Sabi represents the beauty found in aged objects, symbolizing life’s impermanence. By embracing these principles in the interior design, Line2pixels Studio created a space that truly reflects individuality and authenticity.
The design team faced the challenge of unlocking the potential of the 1,110 sqft. apartment with three bedrooms. They had to come up with creative ideas to maximize the small space without compromising on the aesthetic and functionality. Despite these challenges, the team managed to create a space that feels much larger and functional, embodying the spirit of Wabi-Sabi.
In conclusion, Curvo by Line2pixels Studio is a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the power of thoughtful design. It is a space that not only provides comfort and functionality but also evokes a sense of peace and tranquility, truly embodying the Wabi-Sabi philosophy. The design's recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2023 further underscores its remarkable innovation and creativity.
